The Nakheel Tower

Nakheel Tower is a supertall skyscraper proposed for construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates by developer Nakheel. The project was previously called Al Burj (Arabic: البرج‎ “The Tower”). It has been announced that construction is currently on hold, and further work on the tower’s foundations will begin around January 2010. The proposed tower would be 1,400 m tall.

• The Nakheel Tower will be more than a kilometer high

• It will have over 200 floors

• It will have approximately 150 lifts

• The design structure of four separate elements allows for structural rigidity while also allowing the wind to pass freely in the spaces between the skybridges reducing the overall wind load

• Total volume of concrete will be 500,000 cu m

• All of the reinforcing bars laid end to end could stretch from Dubai to New York (1/4 of the way around the world)

• The tower will have 20 km of barrettes – (almost 400 barrettes). Barrettes are a form of pile used to make the foundation. A single foundation barrette has the capacity to support a 50 storey building.

• The building has enough cooling capacity to air-condition over 14,000 modern homes or to service 14 luxury resort hotels each with 2,000 rooms and all the public areas and amenities

• The building is so tall that it experiences five different microclimatic conditions over its height, each with individual design features

• The temperature in the atmosphere at the top of the building can be as much as 10 degrees cooler than the bottom

• Due to the high speed shuttle lifts one may be able to see the sunset twice from the bottom and again from the top of the building

• The goal is to achieve the highest LEED certification we can for a building this size

• There will be approximately 10,000 car parking spaces in Nakheel Tower

• Nakheel Tower and podium combined will be in excess of 2 million sq m

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque is a royal Islamic mosque located in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of the Sultanate of Brunei. The mosque is classified as one of the most spectacular mosques in the Asia Pacific and a major tourist attraction. Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque is considered amongst the people of Brunei as the country’s major landmark.

Named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, the mosque, which is seen as a symbol of the Islamic faith in Brunei, dominates the skyline in the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan. The building was completed in 1958 and is an impressive example of modern Islamic architecture. It is one of the main sights in the capital and the country in general.

The architecture of the mosque has a heavy influence of both Islamic and Italian styles. Designed by an Italian architect, the mosque is constructed on an artificial lagoon near the banks of the Brunei River circulated by a water village (named Kampong Ayer). The Sultan Omar Ali Saiffuddin mosque consists of marble minarets and golden domes with courtyards and fertile gardens filled with fountains. The mosque is circulated by a plethora of trees and floral gardens which in Islam it is considered as an interpretation of heaven. It also has a long bridge meandering across the lagoon to Kamong Ayer (the water village). Also, there is another marble bridge connecting to a structure in the water that resembles a ship was at one time used for official state ceremonies.

The main dome which is thought to be the mosque’s most recognisable feature is covered in pure gold. The mosque stands at 52m (171ft) high and can be seen from virtually anywhere in Bandar Seri Begawan. The main minaret is the mosque’s tallest feature. It incorporates a Renaissance and Italian architectural style which is a unique theme seen in few Islamic houses of worship across the world. The minaret has a working and modern elevator which goes to the top of the structure, people who reach the top of the minaret can witness a panoramic view of the city.

The interior of the mosque is for prayer only but it has a magnificent mosaic stained glass, as well as many arches, semi-domes and marble columns. Nearly all the material used in the construction of the building has been shipped in from other countries. For example, the marble is from Italy, the granite from Shanghai, the crystal chandeliers from England and the carpets from Saudi Arabia.

Dominating the skyline of Arkhangelsk, a city in Russia’s far north-west, it is believed to be the world’s tallest wooden house, soaring 13 floors to reach 144ft – about half the size of the tower of Big Ben.The house that Nikolai Sutyagin built is also crumbling, incomplete and under threat of demolition from city authorities determined to end the former convict’s eccentric 15-year project.When Sutyagin began work on his dacha in 1992, he claims he was only intending to build a two-storey house – larger than those of his neighbours to reflect his position as the city’s richest man, but certainly not a contender for the Guinness Book of Records.However, convinced by a trip to see wooden houses in Japan and Norway, he concluded that he had not used roof space efficiently enough and decided to keep building.”First I added three floors but then the house looked ungainly, like a mushroom,” he said. “So I added another and it still didn’t look right so I kept going. What you see today is a happy accident. “There were other motives too. Having grown up in a Soviet communal flat, Sutyagin said he felt lonely living by himself.Not only would his house make a perfect love nest for his molls it could also accommodate the 18 executives at his construction company.What is left of his fantasy is slowly decaying around him. Even so, it remains a remarkable architectural feat – especially given the fact that Sutyagin built much of it himself – that defies easy description.
A whimsical jumble of planking, from a distance it bears a resemblance to a Japanese pagoda, but draw closer and it seems more like a mix between a Brobdignagian tree house and the lair of a wicked fairytale character.

The Next Worlds’ Largest Arch Bridge in Dubai

Scheduled to finish in the next 4 years, the world’s largest arch bridge will expand one mile long and 670 feet tall in Dubai. The bridged designed by New York based architecture consultant.

- It will have 12 lanes for traffic.
- It will cost 817 million dollars.
- The design has Sheikh Mohammed’s official stamp of approval.
- The bridge will carry more than 2,000 vehicles per hour in each direction.
- A metro line will run across the middle.
- Construction begins in March, with a slated completion date of 2012

Landwasser Viaduct

Landwasser Viaduct is a railway viaduct on the Rhätische Bahn over the Landwasser River in Switzerland. It is a 65m high and 136m long six-arched curved single-tracked viaduct high in the Alps. One of its ramps exits straight into the Landwasser Tunnel. The bridge was built by the firm Müller & Zeerleder. Construction began in March 1901 and the first train crossed the viaduct in October 1902.
